The mural Graffiti Astronaut/Cosmonaut by French street artist Victor Ash established in 2007 in Oranienstraße 195 in Berlin Kreuzberg.
The classic mural in black and white features an oversized astronaut hovering over the city in his space gear. There is no face visible behind the helmet, just a black area. He seems to indicate something with his hand. The patch on his sleeve does not reveal a clear nationality.
Artist Victor Ash was inspired by the Cold War. Due to its division, Berlin became a symbol of the East-West conflict. Ash chose a location near the former border for his work.
Victor Ash was born in Portugal in 1968. He grew up in Paris, where he first came into contact with the graffiti scene in the 90s. Ash tried different styles until he came up with his black and white stencil style. Technically, his works are all classic murals.
Today Ash lives in Copenhagen. He travels through Europe for his work. Among other things, he created the highest street art work in Europe on the Bad Gasteiner Stubnerkogel in the Alps at an altitude of 2,251 meters.
